Have you ever heard of GI Reinforcement? What is it actually? And what role does it play as far as UPVC windows and doors are concerned?

Well there are many rumours in the market regarding GI Reinforcement but what are the rumours and how true they are let us try to find it.

Let us first try to understand what is GI Reinforcement? GI Reinforcement is a kind of ‘U’ or ‘C’ shaped iron strip which is inserted into UPVC Profiles. Well there are two main reasons why a GI Reinforcement is Inserted into a UPVC Profile

The first reason is that inserting GI Reinforcement inside a profile provides strength and rigidity to the profile. You must have heard many a times that UPVC Profiles bend while installation. This is not due to the quality of the upvc profile and does not necessarily mean that the profile is of an inferior quality but because of the absence of the GI Reinforcement, the profile could not get support, strength and rigidity.

But most of the time the customer complains regarding the Profile since they do not understand the actual reason behind the situation. Well this can be a serious issue for the profile company because they might lose goodwill among customers without actually being at fault!

So next time when anybody complains to you regarding your profile then kindly try to find out if at all GI Reinforcement had been used in the upvc windows and doors or not because if not then the profile company is not to be blamed in this case. It is the fault of the window or the door manufacturer.

Also another problem that customers face due to the absence of GI Reinforcement is when hardware like screws etc. are fixed to the upvc profile then these hardware should make its way through the GI Reinforcement for ultimate strength otherwise it is like trying to tighten a screw into plastic. As we all know that even if it of a very superior quality UPVC, eventually it is a plastic material and hence we can very well imagine what would be the outcome. But if the screw penetrates deep within the metal then it will provide ultimate strength to the hardwares which in-turn adds to the durability of your Upvc windows and doors.

However that brings us to the question what should be the thickness of GI Reinforcement?

Generally, in the market we can find GI Reinforcement from 1.2 mm upto 3.5 mm as per different upvc profile, door and window requirement. So which one is recommended for use?

If you are making a normal and standard sized upvc window or door then it is recommended that you use GI Reinforcement with a thickness of 1.2 mm to 1.5 mm.

Now there are rumours in the market that certain UPVC window making machines can weld the profile and the GI Reinforcement together. Well if you have also been told this by someone then you have been lied big time!

This is completely a false claim. No matter whichever machine you buy in this world be it SAICON PORTABLE UPVC WINDOW MAKING MACHINE or any other machine no matter how expensive it may be, know for sure that no machine has the capacity to weld above a temperature of 350 Degree Centigrade. This GI Reinforcement which we also know by the name of galvanised steel has a melting point of 1500 Degree Centigrade. So it is not possible with machines bearing highest welding point of 350 Degree Centigrade to weld GI Reinforcement with a melting point of 1500 Degree Centigrade. Just think about it………..

Understand for sure that this is not possible logically. That is the reason why GI Reinforcement are kept short by at least an inch from the ends of the UPVC Profiles so that they do not interfere with the upvc profile during welding.

So I believe that by now you have been able to understand the importance of GI Reinforcement in UPVC Profiles and the things that you need to keep in mind while using it.

Process of Marketing Upvc Windows & Doors

In this blog we will be discussing the best processes and ways to market Upvc Windows & Doors.

I have seen many people who have opened their own Upvc Window making factory and have also invested and lot of time and money to select the required upvc window making machines, the area, the construction of the factory and so on. But they do not follow the basics of Upvc window selling, hence their production suffer a lot.

So even though there is a lot of demand for Upvc Windows and doors in the global market, they still don’t get the required sales as far as their own factory is concerned.

In this blog I would be giving you some very basic but effective techniques for marketing of your Upvc Windows and doors. I can surely guarantee you that if you follow these techniques for 6 months in a disciplined manner, your sales of Upvc Windows and doors will definitely increase multi-fold times.

So let us start with tip no. 1

Logon to google or any other local online yellow pages (justdial, indiamart, etc) and make a list of builders, architects and interior designers in your city. You can even divide your city into small sections of different areas of your city.

For example, if you are from Mumbai, just log on to http://www.google.com and type in “Builders in Mumbai” or you can even take smaller sections of your city to get a more extensive list (i.e. “Builders in Santacruz”).

Now that you have got the list of builders, architects and interior designers in your city, contact them and take their appointments.

Go to them on the appointed date and time and let them know about your company. So whenever they have any enquiry for Upvc Windows and doors for their project, they will definitely contact you for a quote. This is a very important step as until and unless they know about your Upvc Window and door company, how do you expect them to contact you as in when is required.

Also do remember to follow them up on a regular basis.

Tip no. 2

Again go back to google or your favorite yellow pages website and this time make a contact list of aluminium window fabricators, carpenters and pvc bathroom door manufacturers in your city.

Contact them and make them either your dealers or your commission agents.

We all know that every person related to the real estate building and construction industry has a few potential customers who always listens and consults them.

So if there is a person who is a aluminium window fabricator, even he has a few customers who consults and listens to him. Let’s suppose he has a customer who doesn’t want to put aluminium windows in their building and instead wants to put upvc windows in that particular project.

Being his loyal customer, he will always ask that aluminium window fabricator from where should he be buying the upvc windows for his project.

Now if that aluminium fabricator is already your dealer or commission agent then it is more likely that he is going to bring the lead to you.

Tip No. 3

Take the map of your city and divide it into small parts. I preferably would like to divide it in north, south, east and west.

Now appoint your salesperson to visit each area for a week and find out all buildings that are coming up in that area. Now instruct your person to find out the contact details of the builder or architect of that building.

Take appointment with them and visit them to ask whether they are interested to put Upvc Windows and doors in their project. Or you might be surprised as they might have already decided on putting up upvc windows and doors for their project. Will it not be a bonus shot for your company?? 🙂

Bonus Tip

You must have seen that the Upvc profiles that you buy from your profile company comes with a protection tape (sticker) on it.

Whenever you have installed a upvc window or door in a clients place, 90 percent of the cases the client asks you not to remove the protection tape (sticker) from the surface of the upvc window or door.

As they tend to think that the longer the film is on the profiles the better it is for the maintenance of the upvc window or door.

So eventually the protection film (sticker) remains on the upvc profile of the upvc window for a very long time.

What if you make customized protection film which has the name, phone number, email id and website of your company.

Make it a point to remove the sticker of the profile company from your upvc window or door and put your sticker on them just before you dispatch the upvc windows for your clients site.

It might add upto a little more work to your existing job. But trust me, its completely worth it.

What happens here is, after you have installed your upvc windows and doors at your clients site. There are many friends and relatives of your client who will be visiting them from thereon.

So each time someone likes your work and wants to contact you, it becomes very easy for them.

They can just directly take your contact details and contact you for their requirement and they don’t need to depend on the house-owner to tell them about your contact. Which in most cases the house owner avoids.

Experiment: Corner welding of solid upvc profile

In this blog we will be trying a experiment. You must have seen our other videos where you must have seen us welding normal upvc window and door profiles using SAICON portable upvc corner welding machine, which is successfully used by many people all over the world to make and manufacture upvc windows and doors.

But is it possible to weld the corners of a solid upvc profile using SAICON portable upvc corner welding machine.

Here we are showing you two types of Upvc Profiles kept infront of us. The upvc profile on the left is a normal upvc profile which usually has a wall thickness of 1.5 mm to 2.5 mm and on the right hand side we are having a solid foam upvc profile with the top wall thickness to be 12 mm, bottom side 10 mm and the side walls at 4 mm.

Now we will try to weld the solid upvc profile using SAICON portable upvc corner welding machine.

As you can see in the picture the profile got welded with ease like any normal upvc profile and seems to be a very strong bond.

Now let us clean the surface of our welded upvc profile and see how it comes out finally.

But aesthetic beauty is not all. So we should also check the strength of this profile that we have welded.

Let us opt for a simple testing technique let me throw this profile on the ground with all my might and check weather it breaks or not.

There seems to be no damage to the profile and its perfectly ok.

So we finally concluded a successful experiment in welding a solid upvc profile using SAICON portable upvc corner welding machine.

How to check Upvc Profile quality?

Today we will be learning how to understand the quality of different Upvc window and door profiles of various companies.

Well there are lots of sophisticated ways and techniques to check the quality of a profile in laboratories or test houses.

But it is not always possible for a small fabricator to go around testing the quality of different upvc profile companies in laboratories or test houses. As the process can be very expensive and time consuming.

On the other hand, it is very important for a fabricator to know the quality of the Upvc profile he or she is using, as during the process of Upvc window making, the upvc profile is the most important ingredient used in it.

So is there a simpler way to quickly check the quality of a upvc profile that a company is providing us?

Well the short answer is yes, there is a way out 🙂

Let me explain you the process to go ahead.

First get the master catalog of all the profile companies you want to compare. Well, by master catalog I mean the fat catalog which has all the detailed drawings and weight charts of their upvc profiles.

Then open the page which has the weight and dimensional drawing of any particular type of a profile as given below:

Now you will notice that when you compare the same profile of two different companies which has the same dimension, design and thickness. You will be surprised to see that both upvc profiles has different weights, as given below:

In this case, the company A has a lesser weight compared to company B. So now you must have made up your mind that profile of company B is of a superior quality than company A, right?

We have been taught since childhood that heavier means better. But that is not the case here.

Infact, the upvc profile quality of company A is far better than company B.

Now let me explain…..

Upvc profiles are made using a lot of components, namely pvc resins, calcium, additives, etc. But the components which maintain the highest ratio in a upvc profile are pvc resin and calcium.

Both pvc resin and calcium has different chemical densities. Calcium has far more chemical density than pvc resin making it much more heavier in weight than pvc resin.

But on the other hand, the cost of pvc resin is almost 10 times more than the cost of calcium.

So many upvc profile manufacturing companies try to mix a higher percentage of calcium during upvc profile extrusion than the prescribed limit. This is done to save costs as less use of pvc resins means lesser manufacturing costs and more profit. In the end, the extruded upvc profile becomes heavier in weight.

Now you might ask me, what is the harm in using more calcium?

Well, to understand this we have to go a step back. Calcium is used to give the upvc profile more rigidity. But overuse of calcium in upvc profiles makes it brittle and makes the upvc profile prone to cracking or breaking easily.

So this is the reason, the upvc profile quality of Company A (lighter in weight) is better than the profile quality of Company B (heavier in weight).

So next time you buy Upvc profile, do remember lighter is always better 🙂

What is Aluminium Track in Upvc Windows & Doors?

What is Aluminium Track and why is it used in Upvc Sliding Windows & Doors?

This is a very common question that I receive from aspiring Upvc Window fabricators.

Aluminium Track is the small metal guide rail that you often see on the bottom rails or bottom of the Upvc frame profile of Upvc Sliding Windows and doors. It is made out of aluminium and hence the name aluminium track. Aluminium track is also known as aluminium guide rail in the market.

Now that you know what is a Aluminium Track and where it is used.

Its time to know when it is used during the fabrication of a Upvc Sliding Window or Door. In simpler terms, when is the right time to use a Aluminium Track in the making of a Upvc Sliding Window or Door and when can we skip the use of it.

First let us discuss about Upvc Sliding Windows.

If you are making a Upvc Sliding Window which is relatively small in size (window size less than 5′ x 4′) and you are also using glass of less than 6 mm in thickness. Then you can avoid the use of Aluminium Track in your Upvc Sliding Windows.

But if you are making a Upvc Sliding Window which has a glass thickness of more than 6 mm or if you are using Double Glazed Glass (D.G.U.), then it becomes mandatory to use a aluminium track in the bottom profile of your frame.

Now let us discuss about Upvc Sliding Door

Now read this carefully. Whenever you are making a Upvc Sliding Door irrespective of the thickness of the glass, it is mandatory to use a Aluminium Track in the bottom of the frame profile.

Skipping this would eventually lead to the damage of the bottom of the frame profile and you will be forced to replace the whole frame of the Upvc Sliding Door that you have made.

So please do not cut corners and skip the part of using a Aluminium Track during the fabrication of a Sliding Upvc Door.

One last thing, whenever you are using Aluminium Track or Aluminium Guide Rail in your Upvc Sliding Windows or Doors, always remember to use grooved rollers for the purpose. As flat type rollers will not be able to glide during the sliding of the window and door sash.

Guide to Casement Upvc Windows & Doors

Casement Upvc Windows & Doors also known as Openable Upvc Windows and doors. These type of windows and doors cost a little more than Sliding Upvc Windows and doors. This might be the reason Casement Upvc Windows and doors sell less than Upvc Sliding Windows and doors.

The only important reason for customers to go for Casement or Openable Upvc Windows and doors is that they get almost 100% open area compared to Sliding Upvc Windows or Doors, where the maximum possible opening possible is 66%.

The front elevation and cross section of both Casement windows and doors are shown in the drawings below.

The only difference between a Casement Window Sash and a casement door sash is the width of the profile. A Casement window sash profile is less in width than a casement door sash profile, while the frame for both types of windows remain constant.

The most general series of Upvc profile that is used to make Casement Windows and doors in 60 series profile. Although this is the most commonly used series of upvc profile used to make upvc casement windows and doors, but apart from 60 series upvc profile 65 series, 70 series as well as many other series of uncommon series are also manufactured by different profile companies.

The above given dimensions of 60 series Upvc profiles may vary as per company to company.

Glass thickness starting from 3.5 mm (single glass) upto 32 mm (double or triple glazed glass) can be used in casement upvc windows and doors.

The basic hardwares used in making of a Upvc Casement Window is as follows:

  1. Single point or multi-point lock
  2. Rubber gaskets
  3. Friction Stay

The basic hardwares used in making of a Upvc Casement Door is as follows:

  1. Mortise lock or Multi-point lock
  2. 3D or 2D Hinges
  3. Rubber Gaskets

Rubber Gaskets:

The rubber gaskets used in the Upvc Casement Windows and doors should be of EPDM quality. There are basically two types of rubber gaskets that are used in the making of a casement window or door.

  1. K type: Used in the Upvc Glazing bead profile
  2. O type: Used in Upvc Window & Door sash profile

The colour of the gasket used may vary as per availability or as per the fabricator’s choice. But the colour black is most commonly used.

Friction Stay:

The friction stay used should be of SS304 grade steel and preferably SS316 grade steel near sea side areas where corrosion is very high, to prevent them from rusting over time.

Single Point Locks:

It is a type of lock which can lock your Upvc Windows or doors in only one single point. The types of single point locks used in Upvc Casement Windows are cockspur handle, T-Lock, etc.

Multi-point lock:

Multi-point locks are used in both Upvc casement windows and upvc casement doors. They are also known as espags. These are called multi-point locks as they get locks at more than one point, unlike single point locks.

Different combinations of handle can be used in espags for making Casement windows and doors.

3D and 2D Hinges:

3D and 2D hinges are generally used in casement doors to mount the door sash on the casement door frame. It can also be used in upvc casement windows, but friction stay is a more preferred option for Upvc casement windows.

During installation, it is recommended to use nylon capped galvanized fasteners for the fixing of the frames of the Upvc Windows and Doors.

Any gaps that remain around the wall and the Upvc Frame should be sealed using a Weather Silicone of Neutral Cure preferably matching the colour of the Upvc Window Frame or of white colour.

Guide to Upvc Sliding Windows and Doors

Upvc Sliding Windows & Doors are the most common types of Upvc Windows and doors that are sold in the market. They are the most economical type of Upvc Window or Door design you can make and that is the very reason most windows and doors sold are mostly sliding.

The frames of this kind of Upvc Windows and doors remain constant whereas the thickness of the sash changes depending on whether you are making a sliding window or door. In-case of a window sash, the width of the uPVC sash profile is less and in-case of a door sash the width of the uPVC sash profile is more.

2.5 TRACK SLIDING WINDOWS WITH MESH

The above-given profile designs may vary from company to company.

The most general series of profiles used to make sliding windows and doors are 60 series (for 2 Track Sliding Windows & Doors), 88 series (for 2.5 Track Sliding Windows and mesh sash) and 112 series (for 3 Track windows and doors).

Although these are commonly available series, apart from these other un-common series are also made by different Upvc Profile companies to make Upvc Windows and doors.

The window opening that a customer receives in a 2 Track or 2.5 Track sliding window or door is about 50%. Whereas, if they are using a 3 Track Window or door then the opening that they will get is upto 66%.

Customers can also be suggested to go for a 2 Track 4 Slider or a 3 Track 6 Slider window or door in case of a very wide opening aperture of the window or door area.

Glass thickness starting from 3 mm Single Glass upto 20 mm D. G. U. (Double Glazed Unit) thickness can be used in Upvc Sliding Windows & Doors.

Customer does have the option of going for Single point lock (touchlock or crescent lock) for their windows whereas they can use both single point or multi-point lock (espag) for their doors. Multi-point locks cannot be used in window sashes unless the window sash is made from a sliding door sash profile.

All hardware and hardware fixtures should be fixed using stainless steel screws to prevent any rust in the future.

For rollers, fabricators can go for Single roller or Double adjustable rollers in case of an Upvc Sliding Window and a Double adjustable door roller incase of a Upvc Sliding Door.

Upvc Adjustable Sliding Door Roller is used in Upvc Sliding Doors

The rubber gaskets used in the Upvc Sliding Windows and doors should be of EPDM quality. There is basically three types of rubber gaskets that are used in the making of a sliding window or door.

  1. K type: Used in the Upvc Glazing bead profile
  2. O type: Used in Upvc Window & Door sash profile
  3. Round type: Used to fix the mosquito net in the mesh profile

The colour of the gasket used may vary as per availability or as per the fabricator’s choice. But the colour black is most commonly used.

If the Sliding window or door sash is too heavy then it is mandatory to use Aluminium Track on the bottom profile of the sliding frame.

Upvc Aluminium Track is used on the bottom of the Sliding Window or door frame profile

Woolpile is also used around the sliding sash to prevent it from being loose during the running of the sliding sash along with the frame profile. Again the colour of the woolpile used may vary. But the colour grey and black are the two most common colours available in the market.

The woolpile used should be preferable of silicated quality (silicone tipped) to prevent soaking of water during the rainy season.

During installation, it is recommended to use nylon capped galvanized fasteners for the fixing of the frames of the Upvc Windows and Doors.

Nylon capped galvanised Fasteners should be used to fix uPVC Window and door frames.

Any gaps that remain around the wall and the Upvc Frame should be sealed using a Weather Silicone of Neutral Cure preferably matching the colour of the Upvc Window Frame or of white colour.
